Whitehead wins second South Am title

YPRESS—Shortly after Sugar Land’s Michael Whitehead birdied the
54th hole at BlackHorse Golf Club to finish off a six-shot victory at the
2009 South Texas Amateur, someone asked him a question.
Are you happier to have won the golf tournament, or to be through playing
for the day? It had been over seven hours since Whitehead had teed off.
“To be done playing,” Whitehead said.
“No question.
”
It was that kind of day.
Some players were at the course for almost 12
hours.
Of the 84 players who started the final round, 30 withdrew.
Yet on a nightmarish day of tournament golf, Whitehead not only held it
together, he flourished.
On a day when the average score exceeded 79, he was
the only player to break par with a 2-under 70.
Whitehead will be a junior at Rice University this year.
