TOPIA—Most people go their whole
lives without ever arriving in Utopia.
Me? I found it by taking Highway
90 west to Sabinal and hanging a right onto
Ranch Road 187.
There it was: Utopia.
The city of Utopia, Texas, that is.
The hamlet is located in a forgotten corner
of the Texas Hill Country.
Forgotten, except
for the thousands of golfers nationwide who
view Utopia as the heart and soul of a movement about how both the game of golf and the
game of life should be played.
Excuse me while I scoff.
This place?
Utopia is mostly dusty ranches located along
the Sabinal River.
The population barely
cracks 370 (“If they count all the goats,” a
local joked).
Besides a couple of vacation
hotels, a greasy-spoon café, a ranch supply
store and a coffee house (huh?
