OUSTON—During the television broadcast of the Presidents
Cup, NBC analyst Johnny Miller at one point said, “Confidence
in golf is the one commodity you can’t buy.
You have to earn it.
”
Houston’s Hunter Nelson can attest to that as well as anyone, as he
used a heaping dose of self-reliance he earned over the summer to win the
2009 Greater Houston Senior City Amateur at Memorial Park GC.
Nelson, 56, outlasted Kingwood’s Michael Atnip to win with an
even-par 144 in the 36-hole event.
Earlier in the year, Nelson played in
the USGA Senior Amateur and U.
S.
Mid Amateur.
“There’s no question those experiences helped me a ton out here
today,” Nelson said.
“I’ve been on a golf binge lately.
Being on those big
stages really helped me keep my composure under tough conditions.
