HICAGO—John Grace
stood and watched.
His fate rested on the
putter of his friend and opponent,
Vinny Giles III.
All square through
17 holes of the final match of the
2009 U.
S.
Senior Amateur at
Beverly Country Club in midSeptember, Grace, the 61-year-old
Fort Worth native, barely missed
his 18-foot birdie attempt on the
final hole.
Giles, a longtime pal
and former Walker Cup teammate
of Grace, next faced a slick, downhill putt from 17 feet.
If it dropped,
Giles not only would win the
national championship, he’d
make history.
Giles, 66, made his stroke.
The
ball started rolling, and gravity
took over.
As the white pearl
tracked the cup, it picked up speed.
Then it disappeared.
With it, so
too did Grace’s hopes of winning
his first U.
