Growing up in a big family leaves plenty of time for
reminiscing of days gone by.
When I was a kid, my
grandmother, Mabel Bowser, owned THE fish market
in our small town and the surrounding area.
It was
called The Old Town Fish Market.
On Friday nights, all the Catholics used to line
up down the sidewalk to buy fish for their dinner, so
that they wouldn’t go to Hell.
Being a good Baptist,
my grandmother was happy to supply their needs, and
make a nice profit for herself and her growing family,
of which I am proud to say – I’m one!
Those Friday nights were crazy! We all
pitched in to help; my twelve cousins, my mom, my
three aunts, a few family friends, and Buddy.
Mabel had the freshest fish in town.
She used
to drive her old Chevy pickup truck to the fish pier
and load it up wit
