Rice is an important crop in Madhya Pradesh, but tribal farmers reap poor harvests because their landholdings are small, they sow inferior seed and their conventional farming methods are inefficient. But now, using what is known as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), farmers can double their harvest with just one tenth of the seed.
Amar Singh, a villager in Dhanoli, was sceptical when he saw how far apart farmers using SRI planted the seeds. “How will you get the yield? There are so few plants,” he said. But he was amazed when he saw how many shoots each seedling produced and how many
ears of grain they carried.
