Mercy Remembers Newtown Shootings
Mercy non-violence advocates were among hundreds of people of faith who called their U.S. senators in midDecember to demand expanded background checks on gun purchases in memory of the victims of the Shady
Hook elementary School shootings a year earlier.
Sisters also joined in gatherings in their local communities to commemorate the victims and urge legislators to
pass gun violence prevention legislation.
In Philadelphia, Sister Diane Guerin represented the Mid-Atlantic Community at a prayer service hosted by
Broad Street Ministries. At the event, co-sponsored by Cease Fire PA, Moms Against Guns and Black Clergy
of Philadelphia, pictures of local victims as well as of those of Sandy Hook victims were displayed as attendees
prayed and shared personal stories of gun violence. Sister Diane pledged to support efforts to challenge gun
violence.
