by a legally blind
man who thought
he would be going
to live in one of the
more popular unlicensed assisted living programs in SE Michigan.
These
are programs which operate without seeking the regulatory designation of a home for the aged or adult foster
care group home, bypassing the oversight and scrutiny
that is typically associated with such a credential.
This scrutiny can be incredibly important in matters of
fire safety, on-going staff training and development,
medication administration protocol and abuse reporting.
There is also another real concern I have with these
programs.
As unlicensed models they are statutorily forbidden
from rendering care as a group living entity.
So they
often contract with home health agencies whose personnel come in to render care or
