Teaching social skills instead of punishing is important for parents of children with Autism.
Many times our children mimic what they see us do.
They also learn to react with anger if we
react with anger.
This is even truer with a child with a disability.
If we are going to teach our children differently, parents need to model what they want their
children to do.
This includes a more thoughtful response to instances of misbehaving.
We
teach everything else to a child with autism.
We teach simple things like putting on a shirt.
We teach more complex things like speaking
and learning to read.
