Composition textbooks research
Among many articles which indicate the dysfunction of the textbooks, Tedlock (1980), ironically
and humorously, demonstrates how his authoritative direction of writing impeded himself to write
when he was writing the writing textbook.
Tedlock (1980) reflected his thought:
Ironically, the chapter I was writing yesterday was about inventing and organizing material.
I had just finished what I thought was a successful section on invention: Let It Germinate;
Try Brainstorming, Don’t Edit; Try 5 W’s and H; Try Acting It Out; and Borrow Someone’s
Ear.
These headings introduced short sections which presented, in a kindly way, some
advice about how to get started writing and how to keep going.
But once past these
headings the chapter bored me and I nearly fell asleep at my desk, so I put it aside and
switched to writing what we – my coauthor Paul Jarvie and I – call “case.
”
