Impact
Australia is considered to be a ‘sports mad country’ this is seen through the numbers of
people partaking in sport whether its local or international competitions or simply
watching the sport for the love it.
There are many issues in sport and one major issue in
sport, which has been happening for a while now is Discrimination in sport.
Discrimination is the power of making fine distinctions; discriminating judgement.
Discrimination in sport is a major issue as some are discriminated against there gender,
race, skin colour and the types of sport they participate in.
Gender is a major issue in
sport where females are disadvantaged against males in sport, this is shown through the
media and the spectators.
Gender and Race are the main focus of discrimination as
some women are discriminated against, some reasons for this is that some women may
be very built and therefore look like men, their not physically fit as men which is a fact,
therefore the spectators tend to watch the men play sport as they are interesting and
more competitive and women also go unnoticed and often receive less media attention
as the men get more coverage as they dominate the sporting field.
Discrimination in
sport against gender is still happening but not as much as the media does concentrate on
women, who are popular, Look good and have a glamorous image and also who have
completed an outstanding achievement an example of this is Stephanie Rice.
Stephanie
Rice has won three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and smashed world records
made famous by other women early on in the decade and is portrayed in the media as a
celebrity as she has been on front covers of magazines, TV commercials and modelling
for specific brands in the fashion industry.
This act is a minimal act of discrimination as
other women who have achieved other great sporting achievements are left in the dark
either because of their sort or their looks.
Discriminating against a persons race whether
it’s about there culture, religion, looks or belief it’s happening in sport all around us
whether we see it or not, discriminating against a persons race is not the way to go.
Discriminating against a person’s race may include making rules up because a person
may be a different skin tone or simply not picking the person because of their race.
The
impact of discrimination against spectators may have little effect on the viewers
because they just enjoy watching the sport.
But discrimination in sport may create a bad
atmosphere in sport as racial comments could be made to the players or the crowd
leading to a violent act and causing families not to come to these sporting games as it’s
a bad influence and experience on young kids.
Another reason why spectators may
cause an impact on discrimination in sport is because the sporting team may consist of
people with a different skin tone, their physical appearance and their cultural beliefs.
This may cause spectators to not come to the games and this will decrease the audience
and atmosphere surrounding sport.
