QUEBEC – The leader of the Parti Québécois, Jacques Parizeau, flatly dismisses the possibility that North America, following the lead of Europe, may one day create its own continental parliament.
Even if Mr. Parizeau views as probable the eventual creation of a common North American currency similar to the Euro in Europe, he does not at all believe that this would lead to some kind of political union.
“In Canada, do you think for a moment that English Canadians, who had so much trouble accepting Free Trade with the U.S.A., are dreaming of a common parliament with the Americans?” “What, are you kidding!” exclaimed Mr. Parizeau in an interview with Canadian Press before leaving Quebec for the Christmas holidays.
