Purpose of the wiki
The students at Botany Public School will be participating in a school wiki.
A wiki is a
contemporary web 2.
0 tool that the school has been trialing in class 4H with great
success.
It is designed to replace the existing Botany HomeLink that is currently hosted
on the KidSpace Portal.
Evidence suggests that wikis in education enhance students’
learning experiences and deepen the levels of learner’s engagement and collaboration
within a digital learning environment.
A wiki is essentially a web site where its content
can be edited by anyone who has access to it, or certain parts of it.
In its initial stage,
the school wiki will provide a link for study between home and school, incorporating
websites, homework pages or tasks related to current units of work.
The Parents Page will host newsletters, advice on various educational issues, links to
DET policies and technology tips etc.
The wiki can only be accessed by Botany
students/parents via a username and password.
Only teachers can edit pages at this
stage.
As the site progresses, students will be able to add content or perhaps upload
work to share in class or at home.
Teaching responsible and ethical use of Web 2.
0 applications is of great importance
and the implementation of this wiki has been approved and encouraged by the
Department of Education through fulfilling all necessary safety requirements.
However, the final requirement is that each student and parent/carer reads the terms
and conditions and agrees to them by signing and returning this sheet to their class
teacher.

Safety
This wiki will be created using a wiki tool at http://botanyps.
wikispaces.
com/ .
In the
interest of students’ safety, the following restrictions have been configured on the wiki:
• Only the teacher can enter registrations
• Only students, parents, and staff members with a related interest to this class are
allowed to add to or edit the wiki
• Only registered members can see the wiki
• All wiki content is subject to teacher approval and/or deletion
• The teacher will be notified of any edits to the wiki
• No individual or identifiable profiles are available on the wiki
Terms and Conditions
All students and participants in this wiki project must agree to the terms and conditions
of this agreement.
No student may edit or delete the work of another without including a written
explanation for the changes in the ‘Discussion’ area for that page.
The teachers will make every reasonable effort to monitor conduct on the wiki in order
to maintain a positive learning community.
All participants will respect each other’s time
and efforts by supporting the same positive approach.
No student or other participant may include any information or images on the site that
could compromise the safety of themselves or other wiki members.
Avoid specific
comments about our location or schedules, if they would be visible to outsiders.
