It all started nearly 30 years ago when
Fred Phillips and his design consultancy
Atelier do Sul were commissioned to design
and produce Portugal’s first ever free circulation publication.
The Algarve Gazette was
born on June 1, 1983, and Atelier do Sul,
already well established by this time, carried
on layout, typesetting and preparing the
paper at a time when desk-top publishing
was still in its infancy, until the publishers set
up their own studio to take production inhouse in 1989.
The Algarve Gazette later became a glossy
monthly magazine to be replaced in 2000 by
what is now Essential Algarve, spurning the
group of Essential Magazines and other titles
produced by Open Media today in Portugal
and elsewhere.
