Tougher economic times call for comic artists and illustrators to aggressively
market themselves and diversify their client base and the mediums in which they
present themselves, according to a guide which has been prepared by Jason Thibault,
writer, artist and publisher for Optimum Wound Comics.
Vancouver, British Columbia July 04, 2009 -- Jason Thibault, publisher of Optimum
Wound Comics, has written a guide entitled, "23 Ways for a Comic Artist to Survive
and Thrive in any Economy".
Times are tough out there economically and budgets for
the arts are amongst the first items to be slashed.
A list of preventative measures
was drawn up in order to address these concerns for struggling creators.
The guide contains sections on online comics, merchandising, creating limited art
prints, increasing social media and web presence and interacting with the music
industry.
The emphasis is on positioning the artist as a one-person cottage
industry and arming them against the "putting all of their eggs into one basket"
syndrome.
Optimum Wound expanded their website during the summer of 2008 to include an online
magazine, "Masters of Ink", devoted to interviews with comic artists, illustrators
as well as articles on drawing in pen and ink and pushing creative boundaries.
The
site has become a "go to resource" for artists seeking information on tools and
techniques and methods to promote themselves.
"So many artists and creators have helped me along the way that I m always looking
for ways to give back to our community out there , said Thibault.
"After the
amazing response that we received in the spring from our article, The Comic and
Manga Submission Guidelines for Every Publisher in North America and the UK, I
knew that I should do more.
When I first created this list it was primarily as a
way to get myself pursuing as many avenues as possible as an artist.
I thought that
it might also be helpful for other creators.
"
The staff at Optimum Wound plan to expand on the guide by writing longer articles
and creating videos for each section to be posted on their site.
These will
eventually be collected into a book.
