ozens of local people
have taken on the task
of helping to design the
future of Chard after joining
the new Chard Community
Forum at the beginning of this
year.
Teaming up with leading
design consultancy, LDA design,
the forum members have been
sharing their local knowledge
to help create a long-term
‘masterplan’ for regeneration
within the town, including the
much-anticipatedredevelopment
of the town centre’s ACI factory
site.
We, alongside the South
West RDA and Somerset
County Council, appointed
the consultants in January
to work with local people on
producing an overall vision for
the town, several plans for major
development sites in Chard, and
a framework to help prioritise
investments and improvements
where they are needed.
Businesses, organisations
and representatives from parish,
town and county councils are
also involved in developing the
visions for the town.
Cllr Kim Turner, Area West
Chairman explains, “This is
incredible news for the town.
We
can now start to look, in detail, at
the town as a whole, looking at
how we can develop and enhance
the town both as a shopping and
eating destination and also as
somewhere people can live and
work for years to come.
“We want the plans to reflect
the overall wants and needs of
the people who live and work
in Chard.
We will be organising
ongoingopportunities,extending
beyondJuly,forthegeneralpublic
to participate in.
It is great news
that things have begun and the
ball is now rolling.
“We are taking a thorough
look at the town and, together
with the expert knowledge of the
consultants and the expertise and
values of interested local people,
we will develop an overall plan
that will in time improve all
aspects of the town.
”
The work will cover aspects
of regeneration ranging from
new housing, new business,
leisure facilities, transport links
and making sure the town is
‘balanced’.
The consultants are working
to a July deadline to produce the
overall ‘plans’ for the town and
they will then advise the district,
town and county council on how
to take the ideas forward.
