The Salvaged Times By Sandusky Kayvon A blank slate of sand on the eastern horizon. That’s what awaited us, the settlers and wanderers from the dusty forsaken Wastelands. The northside street sloped up, breaking free from the ground before breaking down in the air. . . an ancient freeway split and skewed into sections. These segments spanned above us, casting cool shadows down on the small dunes and the second salvager, newly reclaimed by our mysterious guardian, the cryptic metal man, the Steamhat Shaman, NeoBokrug Elytis. Individuals and groups poured over the sand, staking out territory and crafting their structures into the landscape. As the searing days and dark nights passed, the name for this new settlement became clear. . . the Junkyard. The marginal order found in the Wastelands deteriorated here in the Junkyard. The train track lines and asphalt streets diminished, swallowed by the sand as the grains changed from a pale yellow to a deathly shade of grey. New haphazard dwellings grew tighter and tighter together, choking the streets into cracked alleys and twisted trails for the scavengers to scour and scrape for salvage and survival. Whether we knew it then or not, a wily sand-spirit of change also moved into our expanding settlement. The signs of migrating settlers, moving back and forth from the Wastes and the Yard or silently disappearing into the uninhabitable dunes beyond, Sifting Sands. . . The Junkyard - Then and Now The Junkyard then. . . (photo by Sandusky Kayvon) The Post-Apocalyptic Press Sandusky Kayvon & Aki Shichiroji (ed. ) Issue 1
