Sidcup Traffic
ReviewThe early vote catching promises made by the
Conservatives to solve the traffic problems in
Sidcup their predecessors created when they
allowed a supermarket to be built on a once free
car park which served the High Street has still
not been resolved.
Cllr.
Mr Peter Craske told the Chronicle all
the discussion was finished and how they proposed to get the traffic moving again would be
announced by now.
Reading through the Councils latest Forward
Plan (October-to January 08) there is no mention of the Sidcup Traffic Review under
Transport only to make the Welling bus lane
suspension permanent and to review, and possibly introduce new parking enforcement using
mobile in-car cameras!

MP SLAMS SECRECY
Bird College win dance/music contract
As reported in the last issue of the Chronicle the
Bird College have won the contract to provide
musical and dance provision in Bexley.
Its new
service for students and parents will be formally
launched on Monday 29 October.
Registration for instrumental lessons, along
with membership of bands, orchestras, choirs and
junior dance, has already begun at Bird College’s
new music service offices at 27 Station Road,
Sidcup.
Shirley Coen, Principal of Bird College, said:
“Bird College is committed to the arts and
welcomes the opportunity to widen its portfolio.
It is a natural development, as there are many
synergies between our current work and music.
There will be new and exciting opportunities for
gifted musicians within the Borough.
”
Bird College will be reinstating and developing
a wide range of musical services, including • Mobile tuition in Bexley’s primary schools for children
at Key Stage 2
• Group instrumental and vocal tuition
• Individual tuition through Licensed Teaching.
It is expected that Licensed Teachers will be
employed by the College.
Other services will include the hire and
purchase of musical instruments and accessories,
regular public performances and examinations
with nationally recognised bodies.
The former BAMPA’s dance faculty has become
Bird College’s new junior dance department,
which will offer unique and unrivalled outlets for
young dancers.
This will include improved
opportunities to work alongside professionally
trained dancers.
The College is liaising with head teachers of
schools with pupils at Key Stage 2 on the reintroduction of instrumental and vocal group
tuition from the forthcoming half-term.
An interim service of Licensed Teaching for
individual lessons will continue under private
arrangements at the former music centre at
Station Road and at Townley Grammar School for
Girls until the autumn half-term.
The Friends
Committee of the former BAMPA will run all the
groups and ensembles similar to those in
operation previously until half-term.
Old Bexley & Sidcup MP Derek Conway has
criticised the secrecy surrounding the review of
the South East London hospital services which
threaten the future of Queen Mary’s Sidcup.
Following a visit to the Hospital Mr.
Conway
said, ‘The clinical and medical staff have done a
tremendous job sorting out the Hospital’s debt
problems.
Clinical standards are leading the sector and yet rumours and counter-rumours persist and demoralise all who work there.
’
Mr.
Conway said, ‘This has really dragged on
far too long.
The uncertainty and mixed-signals
from NHS management are like a sentence of
lingering death over QMS and the public has a
right to know which way the wind is blowing on
this.
’
He added, ‘The staff at QMS, the patients and
those who may yet be, deserve better support
than this and I shall oppose with determination
any plan to cut vital services at QMS.
Secret meetings are taking place where major
changes are being directed to our Local Hospital
Boards without any of the public representatives, i.
e.
MPs or Councillors, given the slightest
idea of what is intended!’
The MP will now press Health Ministers to
put the minutes of these meetings in the public
domain commenting, ‘Enough is enough.
This
secrecy cannot go on without challenge and
those working behind the scenes to scuttle
Queen Mary’s are in for one hell of a fight!’

Stormbreaker
Three enterprising boys who attend BETHS
grammar school have won the admiration of a
large number of people locally for making a film
called Stormbreaker.
It’s based on one of
Horowitz’s Alex Rider books which was also
made in to a film last year.
They borrowed two cameras from the BBC
taking two years to make the film which was
premiered at the Odeon cinema in Greenwich
Penisular recently.
The boys, Ryan Arnold, Kit Bradshaw and
Carl Salton-Cox heard about the Rev’d Stephen
Sealeys appeal for funds for St.
John’s church in
Sidcup and have agreed to have a special
showing in the church hall on the 4th
November starting at 6pm.

Child Poverty
in Bexley
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has welcomed the London Child Poverty
Commission’s first consultation report which
sets out what Commissioners believe are the
key issues that must be tackled to reduce the
high levels of child poverty in Bexley.
The report seeks to build on the significant
range of programmes and activity already instigated by the Mayor to help families on low
incomes with the high costs of living in Bexley.
Many of these are unique to Bexley, including:
• The establishment of a £33m Childcare
Affordability Programme to help parents pay
for childcare costs with £22 million funding
from the London Development Agency and
