A developer has been ordered to demolish a pair
of semi-detached houses in Knoll Road, Bexley.
Mr Tony Smith had built two semi-detached
properties without adhering to the original planning permission to the extent that those built were
substantially different to what had been permitted
in 2005.
Following careful consideration and an independent inspection, the London Borough of Bexley
served an enforcement notice on Mr Smith in
November 2008 requiring him to demolish the
buildings and restore the site.
He appealed against
the issue of the enforcement notice to the Planning Inspectorate and a public inquiry took place
at the Council’s Offices at Wyncham House,
Longlands Road, Sidcup on 28 and 29 May 2009.
At this Inquiry a number of residents and a Ward
Councillor voiced their concerns about the development which had taken place.
The Inspector agreed that Mr Smith did not have
planning permission for the buildings as erected,
found what had been built to be unacceptable in
the street and so upheld the decision of the Council to serve the enforcement notice requiring demolition of the two properties and the restoration of
the site to the approved level.
Cllr John Fuller, Chairman of Bexley’s Planning
Committee said: “I am delighted with the Inspector’s decision and his support for our position.
There are planning rules and regulations that we
must all follow.
The Council has a responsibility
to protect the interests of our residents by ensuring that developers stay within the law and do not
build without permission.
”
It is interesting to see how the councils selective enforcement notices work! Ed

Cannabis Factory
in High Street
The owner of the long established
Snooker Club in Sidcup High Street was
amazed to discover his club flooded.
He
traced the source to a room he had sublet.
He reported the incident to the police
who discovered a large amount of what
are believed to be cannabis plants in an
area that was rented to a third party.
Detectives from the CID at Bexley are investigating.
No arrests have yet been made.
The hosepipe watering the plants had been left
on, flooding not only the Snooker club but also
the two retail premises on the ground floor Finally Framed and Superdrug who hope to
reopen this week.

Sidcup Pop-inParlour boarded up
The Day Centre and Pop-inParlour in Hadlow Road remains closed although all the
equipment belonging to the Day Centre has
been removed to the Age Concern building.
It seems the mystery burglary two years ago when
the Parlour lost all of it’s equipment was never
claimed for on insurance although the premiums
had been paid.
Now it has to be requipped so that Sidcup’s elderly residents can meet there once again.
They
have been told it will be open by September but
no-one is holding their breath.
No permission, no houses!

Listening to the debate
regarding the alleged
mis-use of a credit card
by Ian Clement the former Leader of the Bexley Conservatives for
five years you would
imagine it might have
been a hanging offence.
Cllr, G.
Bacon (Longlands) said he “was appalled
and aghast and accused the Labour Group of
smear by association” on their web site.
The present Leader of the Conservatives Cllr.
Teresa O’Neill said she too “was appalled by her
former Leaders behaviour”, but didn’t explain
why!
Both the Council, its Scrutiny Committee and
Audit Committee knew about Clement’s credit
card spend well over a year ago but it wasn’t
until his alleged mis-use of his GLA credit card
was made public that Bexley Council decided it
had better publish details of his credit card
spending stating transparency!
When the Labour Group first gave the Chronicle information about Mr Clement’s visits to the
USA and his purchasing new office furniture we
arranged to interview him in his office at the
Civic Centre in Bexleyheath where he explained
why he had accepted the invitation to the seminars in the States where he rubbed shoulders
with top executives from other councils and industry.
When he returned he told us his colleagues congratulated him on the new
leadership skills he had acquired and he personally thought it was money well spent as it enabled him to do an even better job
for the council.
The furniture purchased for his office can best be described as utility
and like anything you would find in
any office.
The new Leader of the Conservatives has been so outraged by the
cash disclosures and the alleged
mis-spend of about £2,000 she has
instructed officers at the council to
investigate all councillors expenses and allowances for the past seven years, four of which
were under the Labour Group.
It will be interesting to learn the value of expenses enjoyed by our councillors and officers
who may have accepted gifts, meals or accommodation from its consultants and suppliers
over the past seven years and the amounts councillors have donated to their political parties!
The estimated cost of all this extra work will cost
Bexley Council Tax payers dearly and far in excess of the money the Conservatives are claiming Clement spent.
