UNISON, the public sector trade union, has sent ballot papers to its members on Bexley Council calling for strike action over a 2. 45% pay offer. Heather Wakefield, Unison spokesperson talking on behalf of their Bexley members said: “Our members working in Bexley are disappointed and angry. Four years of real pay cuts have left them choosing between putting food on the table or heating their homes this winter. “Costs of all the basics are running high. Bread is up a massive 44%, petrol 21% and mortgage costs 8%, but for some members working for Bexley Council this offer means a pitiful £7. 50 per week. “By voting for a strike, UNISON members can send a clear message to the employers that pay is an issue that will not go away. The employers must realise that world-class public services cannot be run on empty stomachs!” A variety of council workers covered by the pay claim include care home and home care assistants, housing and environmental health officers, refuse collectors, librarians, nursery nurses, lollipop ladies and school cooks. Over half of those covered earn just £15,825 or less annually. Seventy five per cent are women. See back page Crayford Rainbows Celebrate Over 50 pupils from Danson Primary School took part in a unique bus awareness event held on board a double-decker London bus. The Bexley Safer Transport Team gave year six pupils a pre-secondary school bus safety/awareness lesson inside the bus that was parked in the Danson Lane School. The pupils were divided into two groups. On the upper deck they learned about what not to do on a bus such as damaging property, playing loud music, nuisance and loud behaviour and downstairs they learned about the use of Oyster cards and considerate behaviour. The pupils had to form an orderly queue to board the bus and were shown how to touch in using an Oyster Card. The PCSOs covered a wide range of topics and encouraged feedback from the pupils. After the event, Charlie Warner, aged 10 said, “I really enjoyed the visit and learnt a lot from the officers about what you can and can’t do on the buses”. Rya Asher, aged 11 said, “This is a great way of getting ready for secondary school, most of us have never been on a bus on our own before”. Abbie Pickering, aged 11 said, “It’s good to know that the police and PCSOs are our friends and we can go to them if we are worried about anything”. One of the activities was to raise awareness of how rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour can affect other passengers. The children on the top deck were encouraged to stamp their feet and make as much noise as possible, demonstrating to the children below how alarming and annoying it can be. The highlight of the event was a visit by PCSO Steve, a larger than life character that helps officers get across serious messages to children in a fun and friendly way. The event was organised by PCSOs from the Safer Transport Team with the support of Bexleyheath Bus Garage who provided the bus and a driver for the event. Sergeant Colin Davies said, “We are starting to take the message into schools so that young people are more confident when they join their secondary school and start using the transport network unsupervised. It is also important to educate young people about the impact anti-social behaviour can have on other passengers. This is a new venture and has proved to be extremely successful, we plan to expand these visits to other primary schools next year. ” HOW TO BEHAVE ON A BUS!
