in 2005 and “Best New Advertiser” for Petite Sophisticate in 2008.
Prior to joining Charming
Shoppes in 2004, Herschel was a senior interactive strategist at two of the world’s Top 10

Chris Anderson is editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, which has won a National Magazine

Marquee with the Dartford Town Centre Heritage Initiative there will be a series of delightful
‘line drawings’, taken from the photographic
archive of historical buildings and these will be
available for youngsters to children to colour in
with a prize given each day of the Festival for the
best effort.

Art for Arts Sake
The Dartford Arts Group will be encouraging
children to paint acrylic on canvas and kids will be
invited to join in and demonstrate your painting
prowess and top techniques!
Competition Crazy
From cup cake queens to painting perfect pictures,
Dartford Festival has a veritable treasure chest of
exciting competitions open to people of all ages
but some with a special emphasis for teenagers
under 18.

Dartford gives other
Councils a lead
Dartford Borough Council Leader Jeremy
Kite is to rein in the council’s refreshment
and hospitality budgets as part of his determination to see that the council absorb recessionary pressures rather than pass on higher
bills or reduce services for residents.

The budget used to fund a range of Member
and Mayoral services including refreshments
for meetings and the annual civic reception
was slashed as part of proposals announced at
the council’s budget meeting on Monday 2
March.

Cllr Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council, says it is important for councillors to accept a fair share of the financial
pressures at a time when local families are
worried about their jobs,
“I’ve asked Civic Centre colleagues to save
£18,000 in the way we administer ourselves
and match some of the big savings I have
been able to make in the way my own office
runs.
”

Young people will be able to
once again ‘jump-in’ to a Swanley pool party when the popular
event comes back to the town
next month.

The Jump-in’ pool party will be held at White
Oak Leisure Centre on Saturday 18 July from
6pm to 8pm, exclusively for 8 to 14 year olds.

There will be a DJ playing all the latest tunes,
cool lights, plenty of fun stuff in the pool, all for
just £5!

a piece of design history when it launches its LTD 100 collection ? an exclusive
collection of 100 original one-off designs by students from London College of
Fashion.
The LTD 100 collection launches on Friday 3 July at 1pm on ASOS.

students receiving full profits from the sales of their designs.

This is the third year that leading online fashion e-tailer ASOS.

forces with London College of Fashion (LCF) to celebrate and nurture the talents of
the UK?s hottest young designers.

Housed and showcased in an online gallery, the LTD 100 collection was judged by a
high-profile panel of fashion experts including designer Markus Lupfer, Susie Lau

com fame and menswear designer Tim Soar.

As well as choosing the final 100 pieces for inclusion in the LTD 100 collection,
the panel also had the tough task of selecting three main winners, one womenswear,

David Evennett, MP, was the
guest of honour at the recent official opening of the
rebuilt Barnes Cray Primary
School, in Crayford.
He gave
a short speech congratulating all those involved in the
project and wished pupils
well for the future.

Pupils then sang songs for the
guests, and told the audience what
they liked most about the new
buildings.
After cutting the ribbon,
Mr Evennett was given a tour of
the facilities and met David Willis,
Principal-Designate of the proposed Crayford Academy.

Centre.

The event also coincided with Normandy Primary School’s celebration of the 65th
anniversary of D-Day, which included a live band, a
petting zoo, face painting and a reception.

Notes and Domino began in the work of Ray Ozzie, Tim Halvorsen, and Len Kawell, first on PLATO Notes at
the University of Illinois and later on DECNotes.
Lotus founder Mitch Kapor saw the potential in Ozzie s
collaboration project and the rest is history.

As you might expect of such complex and successful software, IBM Lotus Notes and Domino share a long and rich history.
In
some respects, this history mirrors the evolution of the computing industry itself -- the development and widespread adoption
of PCs, networks, graphical user interfaces, communication and collaboration software, and the Web.
Lotus Notes and
Domino have been there nearly every step of the way, influencing (and being influenced by) all these critical developments.

This article briefly retraces the history of Lotus Notes and Domino, starting with the earliest conceptual and development
stages and continuing through major feature releases.

The early days: The birth of an idea
You may find this a little surprising, but the original concept that eventually led to the Notes client and Domino server
actually pre-dates the commercial development of the personal computer by nearly a decade.
Lotus Notes and Domino find
their roots in some of the first computer programs written at the Computer-based Education Research Laboratory (CERL) at
the University of Illinois.
In 1973, CERL released a product called PLATO Notes.
At that time, the sole function of PLATO
Notes was to tag a bug report with the user s ID and the date and to make the file secure so that other users couldn t delete it.

The system staff could then respond to the problem report at the bottom of the screen.
This kind of secure communication
between users was the basis of PLATO Notes.
In 1976, PLATO Group Notes was released.
Group Notes took the original
concept of PLATO Notes and expanded on it by allowing users to:
Create private notes files organized by subject
Create access lists
Read all notes and responses written since a certain date
Create anonymous notes
Create director message flags
Mark comments in a document
Link notes files with other PLATO systems
Use multiplayer games
PLATO Group Notes became popular and remained so into the 1980s.
However, after the introduction of the IBM PC and
MS-DOS by Microsoft in 1982, the mainframe-based architecture of PLATO became less cost-effective.
Group Notes began
to metamorphose into many other "notes type" software products.

Ray Ozzie, Tim Halvorsen, and Len Kawell worked on the PLATO system at CERL in the late 1970s.
All were impressed
with its real-time communication.
Halvorsen and Kawell later took what they learned at CERL and created a PLATO Noteslike product at Digital Equipment Corporation.

At the same time, Ray Ozzie worked independently on a proposal for developing a PC-based Notes product.
At first, he was
unable to obtain funding for his idea.
However, Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development Corporation, saw potential in
Ozzie s work and decided to invest Lotus s money for its development.
Kapor s business acumen, creativity, and foresight
were critical in changing Ozzie s vision into reality.

The Supreme Court says Americans
have a right to own guns for self-defense
and hunting, the justices’ first major
pronouncement on gun rights in U.
S.

history.
The court’s 5-4 ruling strikes down
the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban
on handguns as incompatible with gun
rights under the Second Amendment.
The
capital’s gun law was among the nation’s
strictest.

The decision goes further than even the
Bush administration wanted, but probably
leaves most firearms laws intact.
The court
had not conclusively interpreted the Second
Amendment since its ratification in 1791.

The amendment reads: “A well regulated
militia, being necessary to the security of
a free state, the right of the people to keep
and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
”
The basic issue for the justices was
whether the amendment protects an
individual’s right to own guns no matter
what, or whether that right is somehow tied
to service in a state militia.

Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for four
colleagues, said the Constitution does
not permit “the absolute prohibition of
handguns held and used for self-defense in
the home.
”
In dissent,
Justice John Paul
Stevens wrote
that the majority
“would have us
believe that over
200 years ago,
the Framers made
a choice to limit
the tools available
to elected
officials wishing to regulate civilian uses
of weapons.
” He said such evidence “is
nowhere to be found.
”
Joining Scalia were Chief Justice John
Roberts and Justices SamuelAlito,Anthony
Kennedy and Clarence Thomas.
The other
dissenters were Justices Stephen Breyer,
Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter.

Dick Anthony Heller, 66, an armed
security guard, sued the District of
Columbia after it rejected his application to
keep a handgun at his home for protection in
the same Capitol Hill neighborhood as the
court.

in Heller’s favor
and struck down

handgun ban,
saying the

The issue caused a split within the Bush
administration.
Vice President Dick Cheney
supported the appeals court ruling, but
others in the administration feared it could
lead to the undoing of other gun regulations,
including a federal law restricting sales of
machine guns.
Other laws keep felons from
buying guns and provide for an instant
background check.

Scalia said nothing in Thursday’s
ruling should “cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of
firearms by felons or the mentally ill, or
laws forbidding the carrying of firearms
in sensitive places such as schools and
government buildings.
”
The law adopted by Washington’s city
council in 1976 bars residents from owning
handguns unless they had one before the
law took effect.
Shotguns and rifles may
be kept in homes, if they are registered,
kept unloaded and either disassembled or
equipped with trigger locks.

Opponentsofthelawhavesaiditprevents
residents from defending themselves.
The
Washington government says no one would
be prosecuted for a gun law violation in
cases of self-defense.

- The inability of the
church to discuss a topic that has become
taboo among many Christians is one of the
root causes why millions of Americans are
leaving the church and never to return, says
one author.

There are “Christians who have
experientially lost their faith” but have no
one to turn to since church culture shuns
the topic, David Sanford said in May.

It’s not that these Christians lost their
salvation, but that they have lost their
faith in the Bible, the church and Christian
beliefs, said the author, who was addressing
attendants at the annual convention of the
Evangelical Press Association in Portland,
Ore.

Over 31 million Americans are part of
this exodus from the church, Sanford said,
citing a Barna Group study.

“Any business that is losing 31 million
customers is going out of business,” he told
a room of Christian journalists and editors.

In his upcoming book, If God Disappears:
9 Faith Wreckers and What to Do About
Them, Sanford details nine reasons he
uncovered through listening to stories
of those who exited the church on why
Christians abandon faith.

Most of the time, Christians leave
because of a “wounded” experience.

They either deliberately walk away due to
questions and doubts that go unanswered
or they feel that God has walked away or
“disappeared,” observed Sanford.

The author noted that he too
“experientially” lost his faith a few years
back when he encountered a series of
unfortunate news, including his daughter
being diagnosed with endometriosis – a
condition that affects the womb.

“I felt God was pounding and pounding
and pounding on me,” he said.

Although Sanford at the time was
serving in multiple Christian positions
– vice president of Publishing and Internet
Ministries for the Luis Palau Evangelistic
Association and a member of Evangelical
Press Association – he said his faith was
discouraged to a point where he couldn’t
even say a prayer before a meal.

But looking back at his situation, Sanford
said he realized that God used the crisis in
his faith as a “hinge” to re-work his wrong
theology and allowed his faith to be more
vibrant than before.

He has since applied his experience to his
ministry where he comes alongside those
who have experientially lost their faith and
walks beside them in their journey.

Speaking from experience, he believes
Christians who return back to the faith can
become a phenomenal force to revitalize
churches.

“When you come back, you come back
for good.
You come back with a passion”
and reach out to others who have left the
church, he said.

In an effort to raise awareness on why
many leave the Christian faith, Sanford
called on the Christian media to help put
this understated issue before churches.

years, it’s going to be 37 million.
