While they were working there, fifty cataract operations were carried out, also funded by SpecSavers. The stuttering recovery and lengthening shadow of government spending cuts make the high street a joyless place for many businesses right now. Yet at times like this we should count our blessings. Many can only dream of the things that we take for granted – like basic eye care. Charity spectacle recycling schemes are not new and many optical professionals have volunteered their help in developing countries. Running a high street retail business is busy enough without see

When we arrived in Ashanti, we were told that microcredit had been tried, and it hadn’t worked. In South Africa, even the regulating body said that they were astonished at our programme – they had never heard of anything like it. Which shows how little people understand the term, and how much it has been distorted: from loans given on an ad hoc basis with little expectation of repayment, to highly structured loans of thousands of pounds for small businesses. Concentrating on complete sustainability has pushed

Ashanti News 10 November 2009 Some Ashanti Development volunteers run their own projects to provide, for example, mosquito nets to babies or hardship money to villagers with special problems, or to provide free school meals to children under five years old. Simon Sholl, who spent six months in Ashanti earlier this year, describes the project he runs which is looking for sponsors to provide five years National Health Insurance cover for needy families. In 2003 the Ghanaian Government began a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to make healthcare available to more people at a more affordable rate. Due to the large amount of casual labour and trade (and hence lack of tax payers) in Ghana, if a person wishes to be eligible for healthcare they must pay an annual subscription to be registered. This subscription fee goes towards paying for the healthcare and entitles them to numerous services without further charge: * Visits to doctors or healthcare workers * Blood and urine sample an

Ashanti News 11 May 2010 David Williamson, a founder trustee of Ashanti Development and professional water engineer with long experience as a WaterAid volunteer, describes progress in providing Ashanti villages with water and sanitation. The underground strata around Gyetiase is mainly metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rock. It doesn’t hold water, so most villages rely on streams. If boreholes in this part of Ghana are to give a reliable yield they must intercept cracks in the solid rock mass and, even with the help of experienced hydrogeologists, only about one in three boreholes is successful. Simon Sholl (who also runs our National Health Insurance Scheme) has just come back from Ghana, where he helped site new boreholes including one at Mprim village, where we had almost given up hope. According to Simon, the borehole is providing ‘shiploads’ of water. He also got the water pumps working again in the villages we call PSK – Patase, Sesease and Master’s home village, Kokobe

Ashanti News 12 July 2010 Our Volunteering Experience in Gyetiase by volunteer child nurse, Nicky Bennett My friend, Anna, and I have just returned from volunteering in Gyetiase and had such a fantastic time no words can describe! I had previously been the year before and on arrival all the children remembered us and were instantly drawn to knowing all about Anna. After meeting the chiefs of the village and discussing our work plans we were able to begin our journey. Each day before school, on breaks and after school the children were looking for us to play and give them the attention many of them do not usually receive. Seeing their faces and watching them enjoy activities we organised for them made the journey even more special. A general day for us included running a clinic for children who usually did not have national health insurance and needed some kind of medical treatment or advice. We were able to help many children at the clinic. However one child troubled us, and we e
