Movilla Abbey is believed to be one of Ulster s most important early church, was founded by St. Finian in 540 AD. There was a School on the site in 543 AD (St. Finians) which was attended by St. Columba. Excavations prior to housing development north of the church showed that the early community was large and hard-working. Remains of pots, metal-working, debris and glass work remains were found. The abbey was plundered by Vikings in 824 AD and refounded in the 12th century by Agustinians Canons to St. Malachy of Armagh, and survived until the suppresion of religious houses in 1540s.
