(from United States of America - copy of american professor s newspaper letter to the public) OUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE AUTOMOBILE We ve been depending on the internal combustion engine (ICE) for more than 100 years and over all that time the efficiency of the ICE has climbed to just under 15%. The remaining 85% is waste heat, unfired combustibles. YOUR PERSONAL COST? For every $10 bill you put in your gas tank, $8. 50 is wasted. It s not that 85% of that gasoline didn t produce anything, it means that only 15% was used to turn the wheels. The 85% produced waste heat, unburned chemicals. THE HID

` Maple Syrup Industry Feels the Heat of Global Warming ` Vermont Maple Syrup Industry Feels Heat Global warming is beginning to take a toll on Vermont s signature product -- maple syrup -- and the farmers and their families who produce it. Tim Branon, the eldest brother of an extended family that has made syrup for five generations inside the sugar house over a boiling process. But know they are doing in a gleaming stainless steel extractor made in nearby Rutland. It boils the sap, removing moisture and concentrating the maple sugar. He says he can show a production of 14,000 gallons of syrup this year. His brother is incharge of the farm. Tim is very well known of the preparation and he is the only person who opens the tap. "It s totally changed," said Tom. "In the 50s, 60s and even 70s we tapped by hand and used buckets, gathering by hand and using horse-drawn sleighs with wood fired evaporators. " Tim and his wife spends most of the time tramping through the snow-covered

` Debunking the Myth - only Industrial Agriculture can Feed the World - Organic Agriculture and Food Security Hold the agrichemicals: Organic ag could keep markets brimming with food. I ve written about it once already, but I want to return to The Economist s recent special series about how industrial agriculture is the true and only way to feed the 9 billion people who will inhabit the world by 2050. The framing, I think, is extremely interesting. The widely revered magazine identifies two strains of thought on the food system s future: one serious and one frivolous. The serious one -- made up of "food companies, plant breeders, and international development agencies" -- is "concerned mainly with feeding the world s growing population," which it plans to do "through the spread of modern farming, plant research and food processing in poor countries. " The frivolous one -- "influential among non-governmental organizations and some consumers" -"concentrates more on the food problems

~ DIRTY SECRETS of the Food Processing Industry We have always processed our Food. That is something that humans do. We cook our food, that is one type of processing, as well as ferment, grind, soak, bake and chop. All of these are types of food processing. TRADITIONAL FOOD PROCESSING Traditional processing has two functions: to make food more digestible and to preserve it for use during times when food is not readily available. This type of processing produced traditional foods like sausage and the old fashioned puddings and haggis, as well as grain products, dairy products, pickles, everything from wine and spirits to lacto fermented beverages. Farmers and artisans – bread makers, cheese makers, distillers, millers and so forth – processed these foods. They made delicious foods that retained their nutritional content and kept the profits on the farm and in the farming communities where it belonged. INDUSTRIAL FOOD PROCESSING Unfortunately, in modern times, we have largely rep

We brought along 36 bags of soup mix. Most of this was donated to a community in Ndola which has experienced tremendous hardship, disease, and poverty. The remaining bags were donated to the Chil

` Fresh Food Baltimore Fresh Food Baltimore is a program of The Men’s Center a non-profit program that consists of a couple of passionate volunteers and the Men’s Center staff. We are becoming good friends with some amazing farmers, non-profits, community associations and emergency food providers who share our vision for a healthy, vibrant East Baltimore. Together, we are working to make our neighborhood a place where open spaces bear wholesome food and play, instead of rodent infestations and trash. We foresee a community where children once again grow up with a deeply rooted relationship with the natural world and it’s bounty; a community nourishing itself with regional and traditional foods instead of settling for the processed quasi-foods that contribute to the chronic illnesses plaguing our area. To nurture this vision we are using our resources and friendships to take extra food from local growers and stores and make it available to health minded residents, residents who want

` Got fruit? Harvest your fruit trees for those in need Pick fruit to help feed the hungry with Solid Ground If you’ve ever walked down a street strewn with fallen fruit and thought “Too bad that food went to waste,” this may be the volunteer opportunity for you. Solid Ground’s Lettuce Link program is looking for help with its Community Fruit Tree Harvest, which delivers apples, plums and pears picked from Seattle fruit trees to food banks and meals programs. Last year, volunteers harvested more than 19,600 pounds of fruit. There are four volunteer orientations coming up: Here’s what you’d do as a Community Fruit Tree Harvest volunteer: ■“Scout” trees in your neighborhood to see if they are ripe before sending volunteers to harvest. ■Harvest at scheduled work parties. ■Be “on call” to harvest fruit in your neighborhood. (An email will go out to the volunteers in a particular neighborhood when a tree there is ripe. Available volunteers will make arrangements for picking. ) ■Provi

` Seniors support the Fraser Valley Gleaners Fraser Valley Gleaners (FVG) is situated amongst the verdant farmlands that surround Abbotsford. In an innovative way they receive donated produce and, with volunteer labour, produce nutritious dried food packs for overseas relief organizations. They produce about seven million food servings annually, mostly in the form of dried soup. FVG’s 7,600 square foot facility is owned by their partner, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). To cut, dice and prepare the donated produce, FVG is totally dependent on an army of volunteers (up to 200 every week), many of whom are seniors. “God has blessed Canadians with an abundant food supply, with large quantities of produce that remain unharvested or are not marketable domestically,” said plant manager Carl Goosen. Every bag of dried produce that goes out has ‘In Christ’s Name’ on it. Along with a backbone of seniors, other volunteers include youth, home school families, school groups and scouts

Successful Gleaning Day - Contra Costa County Slow Food Delta Diablo with a small but mighty group of volunteers had a fun and successful day of gleaning in East County. We started the day with a breakfast of zucchini muffins, coffee, tea and yogurt before heading east. Our first stop was Knoll Farms where Rick and Kristie had already harvested boxes of produce for us. We loaded 10 boxes of figs, 4 big boxes of Mediterranean cucumbers and 4 big boxes of zucchini into the little red truck. Once done, we headed to Tess Garden owned by Barbara Frantz. We harvested 4 big boxes of table grapes, testing them as we harvested to make sure they were delicious. They were. Soon we were off to the Brentwood Farmers Market. We were greeted warmly by Greg, the manager. We shopped for our farmers market lunch while we introduced ourselves to farmers and let them know we were collecting produce for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. The farmers were extremely generous and w
