Wednesday, 29th February, the town of Cooma battened down its hatches, preparing for the worst as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a flash flood alert with a 70% chance of flooding and the potential for 100 to 300 mm of rain to fall over a three day period. The Cooma Ex Services Club was designated as Cooma’s emergency evacuation centre, shops were sandbagged and supermarkets buzzed with shoppers getting in some last minute supplies; just in case! Even the Coles underground car parking was shut, due to potential flooding. People living in low lying areas of Cooma were put on standby for evacuation and the local SES door knocked, informing local residents of the potential for a major flood event. The Southern Highlands SES Region focused on preparing warnings in case evacuations were required for Cooma, Queanbeyan and Goulburn. With a massive weather system bringing rain to much of New South Wales and heavy saturating downfalls and storms in the region during February, the people of

Snowy River SES unit member, Dan Marsden has been awarded the ‘Commissioner’s Commendation for Courage’, for “courageous actions and demonstrating great leadership, skill and initiative under the most dangerous conditions”.
