Ialways look forward to updating Magee’s former residents and fellows about the progress of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences. In this issue, I will share changes in Department quality and safety initiatives, recent NIH grant funding, expanding our educational mission, and faculty award highlights. Expanding Our Clinical Care Several years ago we created the division of obstetrical specialties with the goal of enhancing safety in labor and delivery. Our experienced obstetricians provided extensive training for our residents and primary coverage in the triage unit during the day. However,only two of these physicians were available during the night, leaving minimal coverage. Today we have 24-hour coverage with three in-house physicians. These enhancements have markedly improved patient care and resident education. The UPMC system turned to us to help develop new and innovative ideas about patient safety and quality – an“obstetrical trigger”event proces

Fortunately for us, we placed our trust in Dr. Thomas Krivak, a gynecologic oncologist and researcher at Magee-Womens Research Institute, who discovered Julie’s cancer to be contained in one ovary, performed conservation surgery preserving the una ected ovary and uterus. Dr. Krivak shared his skills with us and as a result, we are blessed with not only Julie’s health, but our newborn son, Richard, too. come out ghting … Please join Julie and me by making a commitment to end ovarian cancer.
