At that time, little or no public funds were available to churches. Many private sources of funding only provided grants to non-profit groups, not churches. To gain access to those funds so that they could be more effective in serving low income families living near the church, St. John’s Outreach Committee decided to form a non-profit corporation called Opening Doors. In 2001, Opening Doors started an art day camp and a Holiday Super Store. The art day camp has operated as a threeweek program that meets each summer. During the camp, the youth participants create a large mural. These murals are seen throughout the city, with several at the Baton Rouge Regional Airport. The Holiday Super Store was cre

Matthew 25:31-46 Local churches throughout the Louisiana Annual Conference will participate in a variety of poverty outreach programs—like the Stone Soup Ministry at First United Methodist Church in Berwick—during “A Day of Caring: Feed My Sheep” on May 14, 2011. Congregations are asked to design a service project that will be implemented on that day, focusing on the needs of the poor in their neighborhood or community. A Day of Caring is a time set aside to corporately show our love and concern to those in need throughout Louisiana. It is a time to share God’s love through words and deeds. Each congregation is invited to find their own way to express that love and care. Local churches are encouraged to join together in their community to do a work day, share in a wors

The population in and around the camp is about 10,000, with the thousands living in the planned settlement of hurricane-proof white tents joined by thousands more in makeshift shelters along the perimeter. Nine pastel green and blue schoolrooms built by the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s nongovernmental organization —one of several agencies providing day-to-day essential services — stand out in the sea of white. “UMCOR” is spray-painted in red next to the front doors. An anchor in the storm This tent city offers a cleaner, more substantial home than the filthy tattered tents thrust into every corner of Port-auPrince. But with no grocery

Tamela Gant, homeowner, was present for the service and served lunch for the volunteers that had worked beside her in building her new home. Gant is a graduate of Southern University and a mother of two sets of twins. Prior to moving into this new home, Tamela and her children lived in a small three-bedroom apartment infested with roaches. The neighborhood was so dangerous that Tamela was afraid to let the kids play outside. “Habitat has been a blessing in my life and I have learned a lot during my partnership,” said Tamela, who is deeply appreciative of all the United Methodist volunteers that made her new home a reality. “If you just believe, trust God and work hard good thi

From Oct. 16-26, a conference-wide LAVIM team served in Cuba in a small fishing village called Boca de Camarioca. The town is located near Varadaro on the north shore of Cuba, about two hours east of Havana. What made it great for at least three of our 12 team members was that we have worked at the church in Boca on a previous mission. The United Methodist Louisiana Conference “was humbled” to receive one of five inaugural United Methodist Global AIDS Leadership Awards during the third international Lighten the Burden Conference held Oct. 14-16. “I am inspired by the efforts of United Methodists throughout the Louisiana Conference as they do their part to help eliminate this killer disease,” said Bishop William W. Hutchinson, Episcopal leader for the conference. The Louisiana Conference was honored during the event along with retired United Methodist Bishop “Fritz” and Etta Mae Mutti, Rev. Donald Messer, Dr. Musa Dube and former President George W. and Laura Bush. The interfaith conference, held in Dallas, focused on how the faith community can work toward an AIDS-free world. Embracing the four foci of the general church, the Louisiana Conference began working in 2009 on “improving health globally” with a special focus on the elimination of AIDS. This annual event, called “Share the Blessing,” started over 12 years ago when church members Tony and Lelani Evans acted on their dream to provide a holiday meal for the needy in the area. Contacts were made to various community agencies to obtain names for the guest list. Invitations went out, and a tradition was started. “The church membership has been wonderful! They don’t even run from me any more when they see me coming with a tinfoil pan,” joked Lorrie McKay, Missions Co
