W Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give. ” By Mr. Churchill’s standards, the six individuals shown here—Al Russell, Ben Hammett, Tom Fiene, MD, Judith Steiner, Ruth Hammett, and Katsy Swan— have made lives worthy of celebration, and Avenidas will do exactly that on Sunday, May 19 at our 25th Annual Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement event. Present The importance of giving has never been more in the public consciousness than it is today. Case in point: since 2010, more than 100 of the world’s wealthiest individuals and families have made “The Giving Pledge,” an informal public commitment to dedicate more than half of their wealth to philanthropy or charitable causes, either during their lifetime or after their death. Although an admittedly small number of individuals have the resources to make such a pledge, the group acknowledges that meaningful giving is not limited to large sums. Their website, http://givingpledge. org, states t

Wellness is multi-dimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental, and spiritual well-being, as well as the environment. A concise theory of wellness was developed in 1977 by Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute, who theorized and composed a wellness paradigm integrating six dimensions of wellness. This is used as a guideline for attaining a complete and fulfilling life. It is the integration of the six interactive dimensions that continually influence and balance each other and create overall wellness. Each dimension forms a piece of a lifestyle pie; without one piece, there is a missing link that imbalances the remainder of the dimensions. Wellness is an active process of which pe

This program, launched five years ago in October of 2007, was cutting edge to start with. Yes, we all know Beacon Hill started a Village in Boston, but we were the first on the West Coast to open, the first to affiliate with an existing nonprofit senior services agency, and the first to reach 350 members in just six months. “The reason we’re one of the biggest and highest ranking Villages since launching is because we’ve been innovative, and the driving force behind that innovation is our members,” states Avenidas Village Director Vickie Epstein. “We’ve listened to them when they’ve made requests and worked hard to meet their needs, because this V

A nurse, perhaps? Or some other paid professional? Would you believe that the average caregiver in 2009 was a 49-year-old woman who had a job outside the home and spent nearly 20 hours per week providing unpaid care to her mother? That’s what an AARP study done in 2011 discovered. And yet many of these adult children and other family members truly don’t see themselves as caregivers. They just feel that they are helping their aging parents, spouses, or siblings. For that very reason, they often fail to use resources that might help both their relatives and themselves. One such resource is Avenidas’ Ninth Annual Family Caregiver Conference taking place on Saturday, September 15 in conjunction with the City of Mountain View, which hosts the conference at the Mountain View Seni
