be a community project with everyone working to help stock the Food
Pantry shelves for those less fortunate.
We need anyone and everyone who can spare an hour or more
just to get lights checked and make
sure other displays are working.

Artists in Our Midst:
Sharon Slimmen
Quilt Exhibit Opening
As part of its series of exhibits, “Artists in Our Midst,”
Beach Corner Arts Studios of Ettrick, Wisconsin proudly announces an exhibit of the work of local quilter Sharon Slimmen, featuring an opening celebration of her creativity with
music and refreshments for the public on Saturday, October
10 from 2-6 p.
m.
Sharon began quilting over 25 years ago at
the suggestion of friends, and promptly joined the La Crosse
Area Quilters.
Though it took her four and a half years to
complete her first quilt, doing it completely by hand, it received the “First Time Quilter Award” at the American Quilting Society show in Paducah, Kentucky in 1989.

That same year she began teaching, first locally, later in the
greater La Crosse area.
She worked and sold her quilts at the
Pine View Sewing Center in Trempealeau, until its closing,
when she opened her own shop, “Wooden Shoe Quilts” in
Holmen.
Recently retired, she divides her time between machine quilting and individual and small group instruction.

To date she has made over 300 quilts and wall-hangings,
including a six-footer that her grandson helped her design, to
commemorate 911, which she will have on display.
She also
contributed to the huge Discover America Quilt that was assembled for the NY City Folk Arts Museum to celebrate the
discovery of America, and has created other commemorative
quilts for the State of Wisconsin, City of Onalaska, and the
US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Many of her quilts have found their way into private collections, and articles about them have appeared in magazines,
newspapers, and books.
Sharon s work strays from traditional
and conventional quilts,which use geometrical patterns.
Her
unique quilts feature abstract compositions and even narratives and themes.
For those of us who think that creativity
springs solely from youth, you will be astounded and inspired
by the work of this young at heart senior.

This free exhibit runs through November and will be open to
the public during regular gallery hours: Thursday through
Saturdays, from 10 a.
m.
To 5 p.
m.

The gallery is located three miles North of Ettrick, WI on
Hwy 53 at County Hwy C in Trempealeau County.

Dallas Brass To Open New
G-E-T Performing Arts Center
Trumpets sound, trombones slide, tubas blow and drums beat.
These are the usual sounds
from a high school band room, but not this fall.
On October 12, 2009 at 7:00 pm, the
internationally acclaimed Dallas Brass will be performing at the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau
High School Performing Arts Center.
Tickets may be purchased from any G-E-T Band
student, or at the following locations: All G-E-T School Offices.

Since its founding in 1983 by Michael Levine, the Dallas Brass has become one of America’s
foremost musical ensembles.
The Dallas Brass show, American Musical Journey, incorporates a full complement of
brass and percussion for a musical travelogue through American history, from the time of George Washington to the
present day.
The program’s music has been selected from the masters – Copland, Bernstein, Gershwin, Berlin,
Sousa; from bands like the Tijuana Brass and Chicago; and styles from Dixieland, swing, Broadway, folk, patriotic,
pop, and even hip-hop! There is definitely “something for everybody.
”
According to Mr.
Levine, “A Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family.
Our ideal audience has an age
range from 5 to 95.
Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music, while showing our audience how
much we enjoy what we do.
” The ensemble includes: Michael Levine (director, trombone), Brian Neal and D.
J.

Barraclough (trumpet), Chris Castellanos (horn), Nat McIntosh (tuba) and Jeff Handel (drums/percussion).

In addition to their solo engagements, the Dallas Brass appears with symphony orchestras nationwide.
Symphonic
credits include the Cincinnati Pops conducted by Erich Kunzel, New York Pops conducted by Skitch Henderson, and
the Philly Pops conducted by Peter Nero.
The Dallas Brass has performed at Carnegie Hall, the John F.
Kennedy
Center in Washington, D.
C.
, and has toured overseas to Europe and the Far East.
They have shared the stage with the
late Bob Hope, have performed for Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.
W.
Bush, have appeared on the CBS
“Early Show,” and their music has been used numerous times on the television show, “The Young & The Restless.
”
The ensemble has released six recordings: Debut, Dallas Brass II, A Merry Christmas with Brass, Windborne,
Nutcracker and American Musical Journey.

The Dallas Brass’ primary mission includes connecting with young musicians.
Clinics are held in conjunction with
almost every concert, and band students are invited to join the Dallas Brass onstage for a selection on the evening
performance.
Both G-E-T High School and Middle School Bands will be performing October 12 with the Dallas
Brass.
The students will also receive a one hour workshop during the school day, and a one hour rehearsal with the
group.
The Dallas Brass Education Foundation, a 501(c)3 corporation, has been formed to support these
educational efforts and donations are gratefully being accepted by the foundation to expand the mission of bringing
their “Music in the School” program to as many school children as possible.

This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National
Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from Wisconsin Arts Board, General Mills Foundation, and
Land O’Lakes Foundation.

This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen
families and communities throughout the country.
Since opening
its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations
that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism.

"Wow, Willard, sounds neat,
but I don t quite understand.

Can you show me?" was my
comment to Willard when I
bumped into him at the Express
Mart.

He started showing me how he had his car fixed to
put hydrogen power to use.
Using a couple of fruit
jars, distilled water, baking soda, some stainless
steel electrodes, a couple of nuts and bolts, and a
line to the manifold.
Well, it really wasn t quite that
simple as he started explaining that you have to adjust things for different engines…
And then a few other
things that he mentioned, but I kind of got
lost in the explanation.

However it certainly
was fascinating.

Any problems with
power? I wondered.

"None," Willard replied.
"Don t even
have to shift down on Blair hill.
" Then he started it up
so I could see how it worked.
Much better mileage he
added.
