Over 100 dead in French strikes and fighting in Mali More than 100 people including rebels and government soldiers were killed in Mali during French air strikes and fighting over the strategic town of Konna, Malian military sources and witnesses said. An army officer at the headquarters of Mali’s former military junta in Bamako said nearly 30 vehicles carrying Islamist fighters had been bombed and “over 100? rebels had been killed in fighting. “We have driven them out, we are effectively in Konna,” Malian Defence Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Diaran Kone told Reuters. “We don’t know if they have planted mines or other traps, so we are moving with caution. There were many deaths on both sides. ” A shopkeeper in Konna said he had counted 148 bodies in four different locations in the town. Among the dead were several dozen uniformed government soldiers. Others wore traditional robes and turbans. Fighters from the Islamist coalition that currently controls northern Mali do not wear

Stoke player makes two own goals, and misses penalty Stoke City forward Jonathan Walters is unlikely to watch highlights of his horror show against Chelsea today after two own goals and a missed penalty, but he at least found staunch support from his manager Tony Pulis. Ireland international Walters twice headed into his own net – just before halftime and then on 62 minutes – as Chelsea cruised to a 4-0 Premier League win at the Britannia Stadium. The 29-year-old, who has netted seven times at the right end in all comeptitions this season, capped his miserable afternoon by wasting a late spot-kick. “We all have bad days,” Pulis told the BBC. “He had a bad day in terms of things not going his way but he was still brave enough to pick the ball up and take the penalty, which is what he is all about. ” Walters gifted Chelsea the lead when he beat goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in trying to clear Cesar Azpilicueta’s chipped cross. Begovic, who has been in outstanding form for Stoke this seas

‘Voting document’ for the environment Din l-Art Helwa is launching an online voting document that will allow the public to express their priorities for the protection of Malta’s natural and cultural heritage. Executive President, Simone Mizzi, said ‘Din l-Art Helwa is apolitical. “Our organisation cannot ask the public which political party to vote for in the forthcoming elections, nor for which candidate. However, we can ask the public which messages an organization like Din l-Art Helwa can take to the political parties and their candidates. The data that will be captured by this online voting system will indicate which goals the public want politicians to set themselves when dealing with the many important and urgent issues that afflict our natural environment and our unique cultural and built heritage. We fervently hope that the parties will then take these messages on board and give them priority when drawing up their national programmes. ” The voting document consists of 12 p

If energy plan fails, I go, says Muscat Labour Leader Joseph Muscat said yesterday he would step down should a government led by him fail to deliver on its pledge to reduce water and electricity tariffs. The statement came casually, in response to a comment by hydrologist Marco Cremona, who argued at a Labour Party electoral campaign activity yesterday that Dr Muscat was taking the biggest risk by making such a pledge. “If there is no interest in this proposal from the private sector it is really the Labour Party and Joseph Muscat who will be taking the biggest risk. “He has said that he will be taking personal responsibility for this project. I think what this means is that he would resign,” Dr Cremona said. “That’s right,” Dr Muscat replied. He was speaking from the floor during a debate with a panel that included only one party affiliate, Konrad Mizzi, the party’s spokesman fronting the energy pledge. Earlier, Dr Cremona said he found Labour’s pledge to be interesting and well

The Rainbows were forced to weather one uncomfortable moment before takingcommand at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. After 12 minutes, Danial Mitev’s thunderbolt from outside the box swerved beyond goaler Vella but crashed against the post before Steve Bonnici cleared for a corner. But Daniel Mariano Bueno put Tarxien ahead on 14 minutes with a low strike, having collected Anderzinho’s through pass and run clear through in the box beforesqueezing a shot under Justin Haber’s body. The score at half-time was not exactly what Mosta had wished for but 50 seconds into the second half, the Blues levelled matters. From another corner, Mitev supplied a teasing cross towards the far post and defender Ferdinando Apap rose above a host of Tarxien defenders

We do not need change in direction – Gonzi Malta does not need a change in direction, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this evening after the Nationalist Party approved its manifesto. “We are not in the position of Cyprus, Spain or Portugal. Why should we change direction? Just so Joseph Muscat can become Prime Minister?” Dr Gonzi said German Chancellor Angela Merkel had praised Malta’s economy and “torpedoed” the advice given by the Labour leader in the past who suggested Malta should follow the footsteps of Cyprus, which is now asking for a bailout. Labour had tried to change direction in the past and drove the country into a wall, he said. Dr Gonzi promised that the PN would present its own proposals on energy soon. “Ours will make sense and everyone will understand them,” he said. Before Dr Gonzi spoke, the PN councillors unanimously approved its manifesto, a declaration of principles on which it would build its electoral programme. The extraordinary general council was he
