Accepted 28 June, 2011 This paper presents the effect of different factors that affect the conversion of Jatropha caucus (JCO) oil to biodiesel and the optimum conditions in a batch reactor using Zinc oxide as catalyst. Four replicate transesterification experimental runs were carried out for each of the mixing duration 25, 50, 75, and 100 min under different typical transesterification reaction conditions of 9. 115 g JCO, temperature (37, 57, and 6

Moser3 and Terry Walker1 1 Biosystems Engineering, Clemson University, Clemson, USA 2 Applied Economics and Statistics, Clemson University, Clemson, USA 3 United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Peoria, USA Canola oil was transesterified using a 1 : 1 molar mixture of methanol and ethanol (M/E) with potassium hydroxide (KOH) catalyst. The effects of catalyst concentration (0. 5–1. 5 wt-%), molar ratio of M/E to canola oil (3 : 1 to 20 : 1) and reaction temperature (25–75 7C) on the percentage yield measured after 2. 5 and 5. 0 min were optimized using a central composite design. A maximum percentage yield of 98% was obtained for a catalyst concentration of 1. 1 wt-% and an M/E to canola oil molar ratio of 20 : 1 at 25 7C at 2. 5 min, whereas a maximum percentage yield of

Environmental Impact A school transportation fleet does not exist in a closed system. There are neighborhoods and parks through which the buses travel every day. What impact do those buses have on the environment of the communities they serve? Using biodiesel reduces air pollution across the entire fleet. Clean air is an important component of a healthy environment in every community. Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to have a complete evaluation of emissions submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency, which has released test results as shown in the table below. In addition, a 1998 study sponsored by the U. S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture concluded that biodiesel reduces life cycle carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 78 percent compared to diesel. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas associated with global climate change. Biodiesel is an excellent choice for schools concerned about the energy balance of their decisions. Biodiesel is made from renewable resourc
