American Regions & Stereotypes When Americans talk about the United States, it is common for them to reference one of six unofficial regions. These regions are not governmental or legal regions, but instead cultural regions, formed naturally by the inhabitants of that region over time. History, geography, literature, music, and climate all played a role in the formation of these regions. The multicultural heritage of each region, as well as demographic characteristics (such as age or occupation) make each region special and distinct. Within several regions, language is used differently and there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude based on geography. Accordingly, there are also stereotypes of the people who live in each of the 6 American regions. Although there are several different ways that different people define the regions of the United States, the map to the left shows the most appropriate classification of regions in the opinion of the

Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was one of the most famous American statesmen of all time. Ben Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers, and his face can be seen in paintings, commercials, statues, and many other places throughout the United States. Although to Russians he is probably most famous for being depicted (pictured) on the $100 bill, he made numerous contributions to American society, science, and government. In fact, he was nicknamed “The First American” because he was the one of the first colonists that tried to gather support for colonial unity (cooperation amongst the colonies). But what was Benjamin Franklin s childhood and upbringing like? For one thing, Benjamin Franklin was born into a large family. His father, Josiah Franklin, had 17 kids from his two marriages. Benjamin was his 15th child and his youngest son. The Franklin family converted to Puritanism some 30 years before Benjamin s birth, and this certainly had an effect on his life. In fa

Despite only being famous internationally a few years, there is already a biopic in the works on American television focusing on Lady Gaga and her quick rise to fame. Even in Russia she is very popular, and her music can be heard in many cafes along Nevsky Prospect. The singer known as Lady Gaga was born on March 28th , 1986 as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. She began singing in small clubs and pubs around 2003, but she only became really famous around 2008. At the beginning of her signing career, she used an interesting tactic in order to get her listeners attention. When she took the stage, people in the audience were not paying attention. They continued to have their conversations, eat, drink, and make noise. Lady Gaga did not like this, so in order to get their attention, she decided to take off her clothes. She would perform in a bra and underwear. This was quite a change for her,

FORGIVENESS - TURNING THE OTHER CHEEK What makes you mad? If somebody wrongs you, what do you feel like doing? Forgiveness is the act of deciding to stop being angry/upset with someone who has done something bad or insulting to you. It is not always easy. Even the Bible is contradictory in his aspect. According to the Christian belief system, forgiveness is a holy and good thing. On the other hand, in the Bible there is another phrase: “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. ” (Exodus 21:24) What do you think that this Bible verse means? Tell us a story about a time when someone did something bad to you. What was your reaction? Would you change your response if you could relive the situation? Contradictory = [ADJ] Something that is different from another related or compared thing, and therefore cannot be true. [Joan told me that Testo Mesto closes at 2200, but Vadim says that they are open until midnight. These contradictory accounts confuse me. ]

STAR WARS Star Wars is undoubtedly an American classic and a cinematic masterpiece. Rarely does a film inspire such a cult following around the world. George Lucas directed all 6 episodes. Strangely, these 6 episodes were not released in chronological order. The first Star Wars movie, “A New Hope” (Episode 4) was released in 1977. The last Star Wars movie to be released was “Revenge of the Sith” (Episode 3) in 2005. George Lucas is probably the second-most famous director in the United States after Steven Spielberg. Other than the Star Wars franchise, George Lucas is also responsible for the Indiana Jones franchise. Although perhaps not popular in Russia, he was also responsible for the following box office hits in the United States: Labyrinth, Willow, Howard the Duck, and American Graffiti. As of 2009, his estimated net worth is 3 billion dollars. Interestingly, his first major hit was American Graffiti, a movie in which he chose Harrison Ford to make hi

SERVICE Whenever you travel, eat out, stay in a hotel, or go on an excursion, service is always one of the most influential factors determining the enjoyment of your time/experience. Service varies greatly from company to company and from country to country. In general, the better the service provided, the more expensive your experience will be. For example, in high end hotels such as Hilton, Hyatt, or Grand Marriott, both the price and the amenities provided will be greater. Such hotels cater to rich or well-to-do clients, often businessmen. Lower end hotels and tours may provide fewer amenities, but at a lower price. Accordingly, the customer service will also likely be less personable. This is because of the economic factor of customer service. When employees are paid a higher salary, they tend to interact more favorably with customers, since they want to keep their job, and it is expected. When employees are paid very little, their motivation to g

THE FUTURE What does the future hold for you? What does the future have in store for you? What is in store for your future? What is in the stars for you? What do the cards hold in store for you? These are all various ways of asking what one s future will be like. This is a subject that many people think about, and others obsess about. How often do you think about the future? Have you ever been to a fortune teller? What are some methods fortune tellers use to tell the future? Time is something that man cannot change, but time certainly changes man. If you think about people who are 80-90 years old today, it s amazing what drastic changes they have seen in their lifetime. National borders have changed, two world wars were waged, transatlantic flights became routine, and the Internet has allowed unimaginable communication and freedom of information. What sort of changes do you envision in the next 50-60 years? Where will you be and what will you be doing in 10 y
