Our Vegetable Oil Car While I ve been in San Francisco, my husband Larry converted our diesel Mercedes to run on waste vegetable oil. I personally haven t driven the car yet, but I was excited to hear that his conversion was successful and how easy it was to do. -- Debra Recently, I modified our old diesel Mercedes Benz to run on vegetable oil instead of diesel fuel. This fuel is also known as waste vegetable oil (WVO). The miles per gallon burning WVO is approximately the same as burning diesel fuel, about 27 miles per gallon. Diesel fuel is now around $4. 00 a gallon where I live in Florida, way more than I want to pay just to burn. Also, diesel and gasoline are non-renewable petroleum resources, and I shouldn t be contributing to global warming by burning these fossil fuels when I drive my car. Vegetable oils are carbon neutral when burned as fuel. They don t produce more carbon waste than the vegetable crop would just biodegrading in the field. Vegetable oils also have the

Vegie Car: Orange Power gives used vegetable oil a Bash There will be no cursing the price of petrol for one of the cars in this year¶s Victorian Variety Bash with µgreen¶ cleaning product maker Orange Power entering a car that will run on used vegetable oil. The orange Mercedes 300D appropriately named ³Vegie 1´ will give petrol stations a miss throughout the 2008 Variety Bash and will instead refuel using waste vegetable oil from local fish and chip shops along the way. Orange Power managing director Andrew Chaney said using vegetable oil as fuel was a much cleaner and cheaper alternative to petrol. ³We¶ll be using waste vegetable oil from local takeaways, RSLs and sporting clubs in the towns we stop in so there¶ll be very little cost involved in refuelling,´ he said. ³The car has a diesel engine running on vegetable oil which is a lot more environmentally responsible than fossil fuels. ³Variety is a great cause and to be able to add some eco-credentials to the 2008 Bash in the

Vegetable Oil Car Frequently Asked Questions Can diesel be used in converted vehicles if SVO is unavailable? Yes, these conversions enable the vehicle to run on multifuels which includes SVO or diesel or any mixture of the two fuels. Will I have to inform my insurance company? Yes, it is necessary to inform your insurance company, however most insurance companies will simply amend the vehicle policy without any additional premium. Insurance companies that have given cover to converted vehicles without any complications include: Frissel/Liverpool and Victoria, Norwich Union, Cornhill and NFU. Will the conversion affect the servicing of the vehicle? This depends on whether the engine of the vehicle is of direct or indirect injection design. With converted indirect injection vehicles there is no change to the usual servicing routine however it is a good precautionary move to have the components of the kit checked periodically to ensure that they are fully functional. Converted direct

Are Vegetable Oil Cars in Your Future Vegetable oil cars? They already exist! And we¶re not talking about biodiesel here, we¶re talking about driving a car that runs on a vegetable oil diesel fuel alternative. Sure, you¶ve heard about biodiesel, but what about vegetable oil cars? No need for transesterification or any other vegetable oil diesel conversion, these cars run on plain old veggie oil. Well, mostly anyway. Running cars on vegetable oil isn¶t as radical an idea as you might think. Rudolf Diesel ran his first diesel engines on peanut oil and he was a big proponent of using his engine to enable farmers to grow their own fuel. But cheap petro-diesel quickly became the favored fuel and Diesel¶s dream was pushed aside. Now with petrodiesel prices skyrocketing and environmental concerns looming, people are starting to think about running cars on vegetable oil again. The main problem is that a plain vegetable oil diesel fuel alternative is much ³thicker´ than petro-diesel. It

Power your car with vegetable oil and smile Did you know you can power a diesel car on vegetable oil, produce fewer carbon emissions and pay a fraction of the cost? And, even stranger, the world has known about this since the diesel engine was first launched in 1901. Sydney-born civil engineer, Gerard Mimmo, 36, and his 28-year-old English wife, Rachel, are not visiting the petrol station every third day, instead the couple have outfitted a six-cylinder diesel Toyota Landcruiser to run on vegetable oil. They have dubbed their Landcruiser, the "Battered Fish", because that is what is smells like as it powers along. The smart-thinking pair - he s just finished his Masters in science studying sustainability, while she is a corporate lawyer - plan to travel 30,000 kilometres around Australia. The trip will take in north Queensland, northern Australia and the red centre before the pair head back to Sydney for Christmas Eve. Gerard explains they have done very little modifications to th

Waste Vegetable Oil as a Diesel Fuel Replacement Abstract In the past, waste edible oils and fats were often used in the production of animal feeds. However due to links between BSE and this practice, the use of waste fats for animal feed is not as common as it once was and this has resulted in surplus quantities becoming available. This has led to significant disposal problems. Waste oils and fats can be used as renewable fuel resources. Conversion of waste oils and fats to biodiesel fuel is one possibility but poses some difficulties such as in the use of toxic or caustic materials and by-product disposal. Conversion to biodiesel may also decrease the economic attractiveness of using waste oils as fuels. An alternative to the use of biodiesel is the use of vegetable oils or rendered animal fats as a fuel. Using relatively unmodified oils or fats eliminates the problems associated with toxic and caustic precursor chemicals and residual biodiesel alkalinity as the oil is used wi
