Rivalry Put Aside for Halftime Show By: Amber Meredith The state of Alabama has a love for football that runs deep in the heart of every citizen, and a rivalry that runs even deeper. The Iron Bowl is a day anticipated with both excitement and dread, for it is the one day that determines who owns the bragging rights for the next year. This rivalry can turn not only friends into sworn enemies, but even families against each other. On November 26, the day of the year when the rivalry between Auburn University and the University of Alabama was the strongest, the crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium had a chance to forget about their hatred for the other team for a few minutes when the marching bands of each university joined forces to perform a halftime show together. Confusion swept across the faces of fans as both bands took the field together in alternating rows of orange and navy, crimson and white. According to the announcer, the Auburn University Marching Band and the University of Alab

There’s more to Irish dancing than just wigs and jigs By: Amber Meredith Alex Tedrow and her father left from Birmingham when she got out of school to make the three hour drive north to Nashville. Four hours after they got there, they drove all the way back home, where she tried to fit in a few hours of sleep before school again the next morning. A few years ago, this was a typical Monday evening for Tedrow in her world, the world of Irish dancing. Tedrow, now 19 and a sophomore at Auburn University, no longer has the time to devote to this sport, but says she would not change the experiences she had growing up for anything. A random newspaper ad was what started it all. When she was 7 years old, Tedrow was invited to join her neighbor in enrolling in an Irish dancing class at a local studio in Birmingham that had been advertised in the newspaper. For five years, Tedrow danced recreationally at this studio, performing occasionally at a recital or for St. Patrick’s Day. Eventual

Jordan was quite the soldier, even receiving a Purple Heart for his efforts in the Army. Journalist Al Benn presented this information about Jordan’s time in the army by reading one of his past articles to the audience of the Neil and Henrietta Davis Lecture Series at the Auburn University Hotel and Dixon Conference Center at 6 p. m. Wednesday. After catering to an Auburn audience by reading his story of the beloved former coach, Benn continued his lecture by recounting his own career of more than 50 years as a journalist, a c

“Becoming Alabama” speakers address anti-immigration bill By: Amber Meredith The state of Alabama is in a state of change. This concept was brought to the attention of those who attended the Saturday morning session of the “Becoming Alabama: Immigration and Migration in a Deep South State” symposium held at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center on Feb. 21. In addition to celebrating Alabama’s diverse cultural history, some speakers also questioned the future of the state and how it would respond to the current immigration debate. Jennifer Brooks, associate professor in the Department of History at Auburn, discussed the ramifications of Alabama’s controversial anti-illegal immigration law H. B. 56. The bill, otherwise known as the Hammon-Beason Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, was signed by Gov. Robert Bentley in June 2011 and is regarded as the nation’s strictest anti-illegal immigration law. Provisions of the bill include requiring public schoo
