Fuel prices, labour and electricity are the three main increases facing the industry which will lead to increased fertilizer and chemical costs. The Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant announced that the department has agreed on a minimum wage for farm workers of R105 per day as from 1 March 2013. This represents an increase of 50% compared to last year’s rate. She said, ‘The wage is pegged at R105 per day for employees who work nine hours a day or R11. 66 per hour, R525 weekly or R2274. 82 per month. ’ The new sectoral determination will be promulgated for a three-year period. Motoriste wat op die N4 ry en die spog landbou ontwikkeling sien met die naam Pienaardam gaan eersdaags verras wees met nog ’n toevoeging: Leeus! Pienaardam Ontspanningsoord op Middelburg is in groot afwagting vir die nuwe toevoeging tot hul wildlewe, twee leeumannetjies en vier leeuwyfies! Bouwerk vorder nou vinnig vir die kampe. Dié projek is ’n eerste in Mpumalanga en gaan onder baie gekontroleerde omstandighede hanteer word, het mnr. Gerrie Gerrits (eienaar) gesê. When looking at a rhino though, other than a few avid birders, most people would hardly notice the brown birds with bright red beaks named in Afrikaans for the creature they are perched on, the ‘Renostervoël’ or Oxpecker. Red-billed Oxpeckers are listed as Near Threatened in South Africa, which means that they are a species we should start worrying about saving now before things get any worse for them.
