GOTCHA Ride Arrives in Auburn University BY: Brooke Bonner Not only can you get around town easier, you can also help the environment with the new eco-friendly taxi service that has recently come to Auburn. Students at Auburn University have even more opportunities for a safe ride home from a night downtown or simply a ride back to their car after a football game. GOTCHA Ride (Green Operated Transit Carrying Humanity Around), originated at Florida State University and is now partnering up with Auburn to promote a "green", fun and free taxi service to students. Auburn, University of Florida and Florida State University are the only schools in the South that have this service. Jesse McGill, a student driver for GOTCHA Ride, says he enjoys making sure people get home safely while having fun doing it. The only money drivers make is tips received from passengers. "On a busy night, I could finish the night with about $100 in tips and around $60 on slower nights," McGill said. Not only

Brian Schmidt Means “Monkey Business” BY: Brooke Bonner Never one to back down from a challenge, Brian Schmidt decided he was going to interview for an opening on WEGL, Auburn University s student operated radio station. His lack of experience in the radio industry or with any of the technology did not stop him from giving it a try. Schmidt has always had a passion for music. Traveling across the country to attend various musical festivals is one of his favorite hobbies. Trips to Nevada, California, Tennessee and Arkansas are just a few places his passion has taken him. The culture of the festivals has inspired his individualistic personality and broadened his taste in music. Bonnaroo in 2009 is what truly sparked his obsession with traveling to attend musical festivals. He has also attended Wakarusa, a four-day camping trip and musical festival in Ozark, Ark. He and a group of close friends call themselves the "Funky Monkeys" and travel to the festivals or as they call them, "

The Spirit of Thanksgiving BY: Brooke Bonner Some would say it s the greatest time of the year. Fall is in full swing, football season is at its peak and college students are heading back home. Students can hardly focus on school because of the thought of the delicious Thanksgiving meal that is near. For one student, Thanksgiving is more than just a fabulous meal. It is a time for a family of 25 (that s only one side) to come together and celebrate being a family. Tricia Barton, a Huntsville native, says she loves being a part of a large family. Holidays are extra special and are a time for family members to all meet in one place and spend time together. "My family is my everything," she said. "I don t think people even understand how close we all are. " Every Thanksgiving Barton’s immediate family all gather at her home in Huntsville. Her brother Jay, 27, and sister Sarah, 25, all come in from out of town to join. Her father Lee, is well known through

Professor Profile BY: Brooke Bonner Jane Austen. Dante Alighieri. James Baldwin. These are just a few names that line the bookshelf of a tidy office in Haley Center room 8086. Nothing is of disarray and the only thing that lies on top of the desk is a “To-Do List” of the day. He has on a perfectly pressed button down shirt and is impressively groomed. All of the other offices surrounding room 8086 are filled with frantic teachers getting ready for Thanksgiving break who are more than ever ready for the day to be over. Not Allen Salerno. Salerno is filled with excitement just thinking about teaching his next World Literature class of the day. “Literature is always on my mind and I look forward to digging into my favorite author’s works to teach students everyday,” Salerno says. His eyes are wide-eyed and bright just talking about literature. “I truly did follow my passion and that passion has led me here, in Auburn, Alabama, and I am forever grateful. ” Salerno has students r
