“Pamba Kahle” - Kings CEO bids adieu. The sudden resignation of Kings CEO Anele Pamba early in December caught most of the rugby world by surprise. The man who was at the helm of the Union’s day-to-day operational matters since 2009 and who, together with long-time friend Cheeky Watson, made up the highly effective administrative double-act that that delivered Super Rugby to the Eastern Cape, made the shock announcement of his immediate departure from the post (forget the “acting CEO” label there was no pretence about his genuine commitment to the role) following the completion of the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens tournament. Despite his President Watson declaring that it was “a shock” to him, Pamba told Sport Elizabeth that the move had actually been coming “for over a year”.

Homegrown Hero Awards 2012: As year-end approaches it is time once again for Sport Elizabeth readers to ask themselves the question: Who is the number one sporting hero from Nelson Mandela Bay based on performances put in over the past twelve months? (Technically that’s not 100% accurate of course, since the Sport Elizabeth Homegrown Hero of the Year Award is based on a year that runs from October to September but …you get the picture). Anyway, the months from October 2011 to September 2012 once again saw athletes from our fair city turn in some world-class performances – the best of which were recognized through 12 Sport Elizabeth Homegrown Hero of the Month awards. It is now from those 12 athletes and performances that our judges must choose the overall winner for the year. Our readers, too, will have a chance to get involved. As has been the case in previous years, your votes by sms will determine which athlete walks off with the 2012 Readers Choice Award .

The draw for the 16-team Africa football showpiece was made in Durban in late October and as one of the four seeded teams, South Africa was drawn in Group A alongside Cape Verde Islands, Angola and Morocco. The quarter-final in Port Elizabeth on Saturday the 2nd of February will pit the winner of group B, which comprises Ghana, Mali, Niger and DR Congo against the runner-up from Bafana's Group A. Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has expressed his delight with the draw but cautioned that he remains wary of all three Group A opponents.

FR EE OCTOBER 2012 ISSUE 49 The Nelson Mandela Metro will not be hosting a multi-million rand international golfing event named after the iconic former President of South Africa in December. Instead, the inaugural 1-million euro Nelson Mandela Championship will be played at Royal Durban Golf Club. Port Elizabeth is the second city on the Eastern Coast to lose an international golfing spectacle to Durban in a matter of weeks. Volvo announced recently that it would be moving the Volvo Champions event from Fancourt at George to Durban Country Club in the first week of January 2013 as part of its rotational policy. As a result, the Africa Open at East London Golf Club is shifted to the second week in February next year but retains its status as a European Tour co-sanctioned event. . . . PRIDE & PREJUDICE - Arrested Development in Port Elizabeth: “Rugby development” has been a catch-phrase in South Africa ever since the advent of democracy and our return to international competition in the 1990’s. What the exact meaning of that term is though, is unclear – it depends on who you ask. To some it means racial quotas, to others it’s a political tool, to many it’s a vague shapeless concept that they’ll say they support in order to avoid doing it. Huge budgets are allocated to rugby development annually yet the fact is that today, almost twenty years af ter the Springboks played their first IRB-sanctioned Test match in eight years against the All Blacks at Ellis Park, “rugby development” , whilst showing definite signs of paying increasing dividends, has failed to deliver the hoped for number of “development” (read “non-white”) players to the highest level of the game in this country. There are various theories as to why this might be the case: racism, lack of a rugby tradi
